Feeding your Hamster
Most hamsters will be happy to eat the regular 'hamster mix' that is widely available on the market. We prefer to buy a pet store-made hamster mix, as opposed to the branded ones. That way we can see what is in the mix, and decide whether it will please our little friends' palates! Our hamsters really enjoy the seeds and nuts-based food, and also flaked corn and peas, but they tend to reject pellets of any sort. So we buy just a plainer hamster mix (without pellets in) and enrich their diet with occasional treats.
Fresh greens can be incorporated into your hamster's menu, but only in moderate amounts, to avoid upsetting your pet's tummy. You may feed your hamster small portions of broccoli, cucumber, cauliflower, apple, etc. Never give them onion, pepper, tomato, chilli, citrus fruits or rhubarb, as this may poison your hamster. Always remove any uneaten fresh veg from your hamster's cage, to avoid it getting mouldy.
For guaranteed hamster happiness, treat your hamster to scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, baby food, tofu and bits of cooked pasta. Try to alternate the treats and try not to offer them more than 3-4 times a week. If you wish to provide a long-term treat, install a chewy fruit stick inside the cage, for your hamster to munch on in whenever it feels like.
And very important: hamsters must always have access to fresh water. It is best to have a nozzled water bottle with ball bearings inside, as these prevent leaks. Bottles should be thoroughly cleaned regularly.
